Finally Making the Connection to Courteney Cox
Tracing My Genealogical Link to a Hollywood Icon Through Royal Ancestry
Finding my family connection to actor Courteney Cox has been a genealogical mystery years in the making. After countless hours of researching, cross-checking surnames, and reviewing historical documents, I finally uncovered our familial link—one that leads directly to shared royal heritage.

My Strange Gift for Remembering Surnames
One unusual skill has always helped me in my genealogy research: I can remember hundreds of surnames from my family tree, even those hundreds of years old.
This peculiar memory served me well while watching an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? featuring Courteney Cox. During the episode, she discovered she was descended from the Berkeley (de Berkeley) family—a name that instantly jumped out at me.
After digging deeper into my records, I confirmed that Courteney and I both descend from Thomas de Berkeley. She is his 18th great-grandchild, while I am his 21st.
Even more shocking, Thomas de Berkeley played a role in imprisoning—and possibly causing the death of—another one of my ancestors: King Edward II (Plantagenet), who died at Berkeley Castle. This is a bit of dark historical irony: one of my great-grandfathers being (likely) responsible for the death of another.

Who Is Courteney Cox?
Courteney Bass Cox was born June 15, 1964, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Richard Lewis Cox and Courteney Bass. She is the youngest of four children.
My earliest memory of seeing Courteney on television was in 1984, during her recurring role on Family Ties as the girlfriend of Michael J. Fox’s character, Alex P. Keaton.
Of course, Courteney is best known for her iconic portrayal of Monica Geller on the hit sitcom Friends. Her comedic timing, expressive acting, and relatable quirks made Monica a fan favorite—one whose episodes still hold up decades later.
Later, Courteney showed her range when she stepped into the gritty, relentless role of Gale Weathers in the Scream film franchise. Her ability to break out of the “Monica” mold and deliver a completely different character still impresses me.

How I’m Connected to Courteney Cox
Based on my genealogical research, Courteney Cox is my 17th cousin, 3× removed. Our shared ancestry includes royal lines extending all the way back to William the Conqueror.
Our most direct shared ancestors are:
-
Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk
-
Elizabeth FitzAlan of Arundel, Duchess of Norfolk
These individuals are Courteney’s 17th great-grandparents and my 18th great-grandparents.
I am also researching a possible connection between Courteney Cox and actor Matt Bomer. If confirmed, this might move him closer than his current listing as my 26th cousin.

More Than "Monica"
Admittedly, the first character I think of when someone says "Courteney Cox" is Monica Geller, and then I think of Gale Weathers followed by Jules Cobb (Cougar Town). Two fun comedies and one badass reporter. Oh, and there's always the Bruce Springsteen music video where Courteney was featured as the beautiful young lady pulled from the audience to dance onstage. All unforgettable, but nowhere near everything that Courteney has done...or is still doing.
With a career that has now spanned over 40 years, Courteney has shown us that she is a not only a multi-talented actor, but she has also directed and produced shows and has her own production company, Coquette Productions, that she founded with her ex-husband, David Arquette. Courteney is also a mother to her and David's daughter, Coco, born in 2004.

Courteney has appeared in 33 films, appeared in a wild number of TV shows and films, directed and produced films & shows, and has been nominated for a multitude of awards and has won 6 awards as of the writing of this very brief bio. Courteney is clearly not only a talented lady, but a lady that has an incredible amount of drive and ambition, and the determination to go after what she wants, and to get it. Incredible!

Final Thoughts
As with the other famous distant cousins on this website, I only know Courteney Cox through her public persona and through her amazing acting talents displayed through her numerous on-screen characters. Even though I don't know Courteney personally, I can still be impressed by all of the amazing things that she has accomplished thus far in her life. I am looking forward to seeing more from this talented distant cousin in the near future.
